| I just read The Violin Man and it was breathtaking. The illustrations supported the story beautifully and I loved the style of art; similar to my own. The story was beautiful. Loved every minute of it and I spent ages on each page, aborbing every detail. I will read it over and over and no doubt find something new every time. Thankyou for your books! They are an inspiration to writers like myself and a beautiful picture of the unspoken emotions of life. |

Hello, Colin. My name is Ian. I am 47 years old and when I grow up I want to be a writer like you. Well, maybe a really well paid one instead. I accidentally bought "Future Eden" a while ago and read it. Last Christmas I read it again. You'd think I'd learn. Then at my local library I found "Laughing for Beginners" which I am currently ripping through, though I tend to spend a while on the rude bits. Having fallen in love with Kaye from "FE" I now need to find the sequel. All the best with your writing/ drawing/ welding or whatever it is you're up to at the moment. |

She takes the book everywhere to study something she might have missed. I am sure we will be checking out more of your books soon. Thank you. |

| Hi Colin. I love your work. It's hard to come by in Malaysia so thank goodness for this site. Actually I'm mentioning you in my column (I'm a journalist) this weekend and, looking at the site, I suddenly realised that you live in Australia! I'm coming to Sydney in May (for a children's book confereence) and I thought it worth a shot to ask if you would grant me an interview. I understand if you would rather not. I just want to say you are one of my favourite illustrators. Thanks! |

Colin- Glad to see you are still writing--I was worried that you had stopped! I have all your picture books, and just love them, even at almost age 49! So imaginative and incredibly detailed--smaller worlds within larger worlds--I never tire of them! And I have been looking for and finding Max and Cafe Max on almost every page. Can't wait to get your newest one-keep up the stellar work! (any plans for a picture book with gardens in it? or an antique shop? ) |

Hi Colin Sharon here, Claires mum. Claire showed me your books and I read and enthuse over them with great delight. I paint and my dream is to write and illustrate a book - for any age - one of the most appealing aspects about your books. I think I might buy some for the coffee table and laughing for beginners for my husband and myself. Fabulous website by the way, thanks for the great info and amazing books. I will definitely purchase some of your books and read them to pupoils in classes in the school of which I am head teacher. |

Hi, I am really intrigued by a calendar you did in roughly 1988 for a bank. My mum has kept the pictures and put them all into seperate frames. They are of tree houses. I think there is also what looks like a little seagull in each picture where you have signed each of the calendar months. I cannot find anything about this calendar on the web and wonder if you can tell me anything more about it. Also does anybody know of anymore of these calendars being printed the same as this one. My children have all adored the pictures as they have grown up and think they are great. I think your drawings are brilliant and nobody does them like you do. Debbie Moore |

| Colin, your writing is so easy to read and relate to. There are many people on the school circuit who show kids their work and talk about writing and illustrating.....that are really BAD. Why don't you do it? (if you don't already) You seem to have a good sense of humour, are very talented and have something to share that people of all ages can relate to. You new way of illustrating (using your Mac) is really something worth sharing with kids (and teachers!) Thanks for such a interesting site. |

I am a special needs teacher. Whenever I teach food chains and life cycles I use stories from 'Sid the Mosquito' and 'Attila the Bluebottle' to illustrate the ideas. The students love it and it makes for some brilliant discussions. My favourite story is 'Going to Sleep' from 'Sid' it strikes a chord and even at 53 still makes me cry whenever I read it. Thank you for some lovely stories and illustrations which are quite stunning. |

Your books are unbelievable! I brought one of your books for my son yesterday at the Illustration store at Southbank...but when I got home and read the book I decided the book was now mine! (Sorry Ollie)...and I had to find out more ...did you have other books I could get a hold of? etc..etc. So I visited your website and I am hooked! I am going to get every one of them. And when my son is old enough (he is only 9 months) I am going to sit with him and read them to him. We will pour over the images together. I draw in my spare time (well use to anyway!) and when I looked at your pictures it was like someone was drawing what was in my head! Keep up the fantastic work! I will be visting your website often to find out about any new books. What a breath of fresh air. I am re-inspired! |

Hi, My name is Bryn. I am six years old, nearly seven. Almost every day I get your books out of the libray. My favourite one is How to Live Forever because there is lots of stuff to look at and little and big things to find. I love it when the books come alive. My grandmother, who is a teacher, loves your books too. One day, I hope my grandmother might buy me my own copies of all your books. Right now, I have been to the library this morning and have got The Paradise Garden, Falling Angels, Looking for Atlantis, The Violin Man, and How to Live Forever. And I'm your favourite fan. Love from Bryn |

You came to our school today Roscommon in Manurewa South Auckland and talked to the kids. I believe i enjoyed it as much as the children. Love the way that you are so enthusiastic, yet child like in the way you talk about the experiences or ideas that led to your books. Only read Paperbag prince, but have already been hooked and am sure my students will find something in it for each of them. It has also given me a new attitude to children and the way they write and what we as teachers expect. Thanks alot Colin _ Junaid |

i liked your pictures in the castle book, they were awesome. and this is what i could see in the picture below, but it wouldnt let me put it into the textbox: i could see: a black rectangle with a yellow window and a black dog with knobbly knees and a whippy tail, and a capital M and a lower case A and a capital X ( oh, and the dog has a shadow too, and its ears are too long.) |

| Hi Colin, I was reading your book The Violin Man to my 5 yr old boy Jesse tonight, and had a good old cathartic cry! I wasn't expecting to be completely disarmed by your elegant and soulful storytelling and stunned by your illustrations... but there I was! I'm a 47yr old musician/singer who has known the street and the stage and i thank you for your wonderful insight... keep writing my friend... already a fan, Leigh James |

| The book about Riley is the first I've read and I shared it with my husband. He bought me my own copy and now when one of us a bit tense, the other says 'Come on, release your inner Riley' and we smile and take a breath and calm down. We are in our late forties and will nurture our inner Rileys forever. Thank you, we are very grateful. |

Although I'd seen your book and "skimly" read them...it wasn't until I read and became entangled in the bookshelves of "How to Live Forever" that I became an ardent fan! Your WONDERFUL ".....Life of Riley" has cemented my opinion of you..and in the past three weeks I have read it to about 20 classes of high school students! I didn't really think about the voice I needed to use but the voice that came to as I read it aloud that first time..has stayed with me. speaking to another moonlighting librarian.. he also spoke about having a "voice". I'm glad that there's someone like me who thinks like that too...we've both admitted that it was the first book that definitely need a particular voice! i've heard otheers read "Riley" without "a voice" ..and it's not the same! I really needed to buy my own copy..because this book has become a part of me ...and last night I recreated Riley into a 2D three foot high "being" so that my son Michael "Norman" could accompany him at/to a Book Week Parade today. Congratulatios on winning the Picture Book of the Year Award!! I'm glad the judges agreed with me this year! Finding a voice for your book encouraged me to find a voice so that you could hear my voice! With congratulatory smiles, Elizabeth |
